Tony Zamora Jazz Scholarship

Please help us launch this campaign

The Jazz Club of Lafayette is pleased to announce the establishment of The Tony Zamora Jazz Scholarship for high school students.

We are a 501(c)(3) not-for profit organization, founded in 2009 and granted legal tax-exempt status in 2010. Our mission is to present jazz as it was meant to be heard: in live concerts in intimate settings where high-quality performance, deep listening, education, and interaction are the centerpieces.

With an average annual membership of 80 members, and now in our sixth season in a new all-ages venue, our goals include efforts to grow our annual membership to 100 members, to enhance our educational efforts and offerings, and to establish and fund a $500 scholarship in the name of Tony Zamora that will be given annually to a deserving high school musician to support further studies in jazz. Students from the following counties are eligible to apply/audition: Benton, Boone, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White.

We have enlisted The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette to help us establish the scholarship and to manage it for The Jazz Club. They are experts in this work and are eager to be involved, and are especially excited about this project because of Tony’s sterling reputation and many contributions to Purdue and the greater Lafayette community in music and far beyond.

In order to establish the scholarship fund we need $5,000, and we’re writing to ask your help in raising it by the end of 2014. We are excited to announce that for a limited time all contributions are eligible for a 50% match by the Community Foundation, but only for as long as their matching funds last, so the more and the sooner you can contribute, the more each dollar will count.

Once we have raised $10,000 we can begin to award the scholarship annually. Our goal is to raise that amount as quickly as possible in 2015 so we can make the first award in the spring of 2016. We already have over $2,500 (pre-match dollars) in pledges, and we’re hoping that your contributions will quickly bring us at least to the $5,000 level to establish the fund, if not beyond that and well on our way to raising the remainder of the $10,000 goal.

We thank you for your support of The Jazz Club and of this exciting new scholarship and the opportunity it represents to foster the future of jazz!
